If you were to ask me what my favorite food was, hands-down, no competition, sandwiches wins. That being so, Subway is my place to eat. A fast-food reminder of my old days, I choose this over any other sandwich place any time.
Let me take a quick detour and tell you an embarrassing story about sandwiches. Maybe you can relate. After choosing Jimmy John’s with about three minutes of research online (all my non-vegan family wanted to eat there), I ended up swapping the non-vegan bread for a lettuce wrap and ordered the veggie sandwich. I didn’t realize my mistake until I started eating and bit into pure lettuce. A pile of lettuce with a few tomatoes and cucumbers thrown in. After that embarrassing fiasco, I’m glad to say Subway offers vegan bread.
Let’s just say, I’m not the best food orderer under pressure. I hate the pressure from people standing behind me in line as I try to figure out how to mess with the menu to fit my lifestyle.
As a new vegan, I always wished there was a quick-read article that would list every vegan menu item so I could order quickly. With that in mind, I started this series. You can check out my last post about Chipotle here.
I hope this series helps you to avoid embarrassing moments as we wait for the world to realize veganism is amazing. Let me know in the comments below which other restaurants to add.
But, I’ve already talked too much. This is supposed to be a quick guide. Well, here it is.
Vegan menu items
Subway has a few options for sandwiches. Basically, though, you’re going to skip the first half of the ordering (meat and cheese) completely. Go ahead and scooch on over to the toppings side.
Below, I’ll list all the vegan items. Some of these are regional. You’re not likely to find these, but I wanted to list them anyway so you see all options.

- Vegan patty: There is a vegan patty that is regional to Malibu, however, the more popular veggie patty contains eggs and milk.
- Falafel: There is also falafel listed regionally, though make sure to call ahead because it is not at many stores. As well, I have heard it isn’t very tasty.

Vegan meals
Unless you can somehow find a regional falafel or vegan patty (not to be confused with the veggie patty which is only vegetarian), the meal is going to be very simple.
Sandwich or salad?
Either way it will be the veggie version. I’ll leave you to look at all the toppings and sauces listed above to decide that.
My favorite meal
I’m a creature of habit, so I order the same sandwich every time I’m at Subway.
Veggie sandwich on Italian bread, toasted, with lettuce, tomato, olives, banana peppers, and sweet onion sauce. Occasionally, I’ll get mustard instead of sweet onion sauce. And, if I’m feeling extra fancy, I’ll add guacamole.
